This is a great debate that started off here http://www.bpm-research.com/2008/03/03/how-much-bpmn-do-you-need/
A study of the usage of various symbols in the BPMN toolset brings out some interesting facts. The most common set of symbols used are termed as Core and Extended Core, where as those less used are termed as Specialist Set and those rarely used have been named overheads.
While I like to use a lot of the symbols in the specialized set, I find that end users of my diagrams (mostly business users) find the comfort level only with the Core and Extended core sets (that includes pools, lanes, activity, start/end events, gateways, message flows ..).
I would love to work with an IT team and find out if they appreciate a BPMN flow diagram or prefer to get it in the UML format.
